The story

Earth's bright but very different neighbor

Venus is similar to Earth in size and overall rocky composition, which is why the two worlds are sometimes compared as planetary neighbors.

Yet Venus developed a dense atmosphere dominated by carbon dioxide, thick clouds, and surface conditions that are dramatically different from Earth.

Venus can become extremely bright in Earth's sky because it is relatively close to Earth and its clouds reflect a large amount of sunlight.

Because Venus orbits closer to the Sun than Earth does, it is usually seen near sunrise or sunset rather than high in the middle of the night.

Venus completes an orbit around the Sun faster than Earth. From our viewpoint, the changing geometry between Earth, Venus, and the Sun determines when Venus becomes visible in the morning or evening sky.
