Vera Rubin

Rubin grew up in Washington, D.C., and became fascinated by the movement of stars. She built an early cardboard telescope and pursued astronomy despite barriers faced by women in the field.

Explain galaxy rotation when the visible matter did not provide enough gravity to match the observed speeds.

Rubin and collaborators produced influential rotation-curve measurements showing that galaxies behave as if surrounded by large amounts of unseen mass.

Her observations became central evidence for dark matter.

Her work shows how orbital motion can reveal mass that cannot be seen directly—the same basic logic that makes motion such a powerful source of information.
