Early life

Neil Armstrong was born in Ohio in 1930 and developed an early interest in aviation.
He became a naval aviator, studied aeronautical engineering, worked as a test pilot, and later joined NASA's astronaut corps.

Learning rendezvous before going to the Moon
Before Apollo, Armstrong commanded Gemini 8, which achieved the first docking of two spacecraft in orbit.
The mission also faced a serious emergency when a stuck thruster caused uncontrolled rotation, giving Armstrong direct experience with high-pressure spacecraft operations.

The first crewed lunar landing
Armstrong commanded Apollo 11 with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard Columbia while Armstrong and Aldrin descended aboard Eagle.
