Early life
Pilot and astronaut
Michael Collins was born in 1930 in Rome, Italy, while his father was serving in the U.S. military. He later graduated from West Point and became an Air Force pilot and test pilot.
NASA selected him as an astronaut in 1963.

Learning orbital operations before Apollo
Before Apollo 11, Collins flew on Gemini 10, a mission involving rendezvous, docking, and extravehicular activity.
Those skills were part of NASA's preparation for the more complex operations required around the Moon.

During the lunar landing, Collins piloted the command module Columbia alone around the Moon while Armstrong and Aldrin descended in Eagle.
