John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1917. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before entering politics and eventually becoming the 35th president of the United States.
Kennedy entered office at a moment when Cold War competition was becoming deeply connected to science and technology. Spaceflight quickly became one of the most visible measures of national capability.

After the Soviet Union achieved major early space milestones, Kennedy asked the United States to commit to landing a person on the Moon and returning that person safely to Earth before the end of the 1960s.
