Why this belongs in the Library: TransitSatellite’s Solar System views continue the same tradition: use observation and position to understand motion.

Chapter 1

Where the Story Begins

Galileo grew up in a musical and intellectually active household. His father encouraged careful reasoning rather than accepting authority without question.

Chapter 2

The Challenge

Use observation to test long-held ideas about the heavens at a time when those ideas were deeply tied to philosophy and authority.

Chapter 3

The Turning Point

He observed Jupiter’s four largest moons, the phases of Venus, lunar terrain, and sunspots—evidence that the heavens were dynamic and not centered on Earth in the old way.

Chapter 4

What Changed

Galileo helped establish telescopic observation as a central tool of astronomy.

Chapter 5

TransitSatellite Connection

TransitSatellite’s Solar System views continue the same tradition: use observation and position to understand motion.

Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and Love

Dava Sobel

Sobel uses the surviving letters of Galileo's daughter Maria Celeste to place his scientific work within his family life and seventeenth-century Italy. The result gives historical context to the observations and controversies associated with Galileo.
