Early life

A naval aviator enters the astronaut corps

Alan Shepard was born in 1923 in New Hampshire and became a naval aviator and test pilot.

He was selected as one of NASA's original Mercury Seven astronauts, the first American group trained for human spaceflight.

Freedom 7

America's first human spaceflight

On May 5, 1961, Shepard flew Freedom 7 on a suborbital mission and became the first American in space.

Unlike a full orbital mission, the flight followed a high arc and returned to Earth without completing a revolution around the planet.

Apollo 14

A return to flight leads to the Moon

After being grounded for a medical condition and later returning to flight status, Shepard commanded Apollo 14 in 1971.

He and Edgar Mitchell landed on the Moon while Stuart Roosa remained in lunar orbit.
