SPACEMOBILE-003
Space-Based Cellular Connectivity
SPACEMOBILE-003 is one of AST SpaceMobile's first five commercial BlueBird satellites, launched together on September 12, 2024, to support direct-to-device cellular broadband from low Earth orbit.
Mission type
Commercial direct-to-device communications mission
Launch
September 12, 2024
Launch vehicle
SpaceX Falcon 9
Launch site
Cape Canaveral Space Launch Complex 40, Florida
Objective
Extending cellular networks into orbit
The BlueBird 1-5 mission was designed to place AST SpaceMobile's first five commercial satellites into low Earth orbit and begin building a space-based cellular broadband network.
The core goal is direct connectivity with ordinary mobile devices through partnerships with terrestrial mobile-network operators.
Launch
Five BlueBird satellites on one Falcon 9
The first five commercial BlueBird satellites launched together on September 12, 2024, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral.
After separation into low Earth orbit, the spacecraft began checkout and deployment of their large communications arrays.
Communications architecture
Large arrays for direct-to-device links
Each of the first five commercial BlueBird satellites carries a very large phased array. AST SpaceMobile reports an area of roughly 693 square feet for each spacecraft.
The large aperture helps create electronically steered beams toward service areas on Earth while the spacecraft moves rapidly through low Earth orbit.
Network role
Part of a larger orbital cellular system
A single BlueBird cannot provide continuous global service by itself. The concept depends on a growing constellation, coordinated spectrum use, terrestrial network partners, and handoffs as satellites move across the sky.
SPACEMOBILE-003 therefore represents one node in a broader communications system rather than a stand-alone network.
